Austin Water Utility (AWU) plans a 3-year-long heavy construction project, called the "Jollyville Transmission Main", in the heart of the Spicewood Springs Road area (the JTM is part of the new Water Treatment Plant 4 being constructed at the corner of 2222 and 620). AWU plans to build and operate a huge shaft 30-50 feet in diameter and 100 feet deep - along Spicewood Springs Road and Old Lampasas Trail, and use it as a retrieval shaft as part of a 7-mile long tunnel 10 to 13 feet in diameter. Piping and grouting will also be done at this site, which may entail an onsite cement plant and hundreds of 18-wheel vehicles driving up and down Spicewood Springs Road. Stop The Shafts is a coalition of neighborhoods and citizens that aims to prove there are far less disruptive alternatives.
